While installing opencv on an older version of debian for work I kept getting an error while loading shared libraries which turned out to be a pretty easy fix, just finding the libraries and adding them to the dynamic linker.
The libraries I was having trouble with below:
./blobtrack: error while loading shared libraries: libcxcore.so.1: cannot open [...]

UPDATE:
There is a much easier way of installing player/stage in Ubuntu 9.10 as pointed out by Arkapravo in the comments
sudo apt-get install robot-player stage
END UPDATE
You will need to have cmake and build-essentials installed:
sudo apt-get install cmake build-essential
How To Install Player:

Both Fedora and Ubuntu packages are available in 32 & 64bit for Download, I’ve been using the alpha for a while and it’s pretty much as stable as Firefox on Ubuntu and oh so much faster. Go grab it now.

Most the comments show the guide works however I have a couple of problems:
Firstly when reloading the libraries to make opencv show up

Right now for me at least, the con’s of 64bit linux still seem to outweigh it’s pro’s. In that the constant struggle to get the majority of software and API’s I use working well (or at all) under 64bit to me just isn’t worth the little performance gain.
The problem really lies in those programs which [...]

Great guide by wootah from the ubuntuforums.org of how to get the wireless receiver for PC working under linux, using the Userspace Xbox/Xbox360 USB Gamepad Driver for Linux from grumbel. It works pretty much perfectly, I use it as a remote to control my laptop when it is displayed on my TV.
Supported Controllers

Original Xbox controllers [...]

MP3/Flash/DVD
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
Music Applet
sudo apt-get install music-applet
Banshee
sudo apt-get install banshee
Mirage – Banshee Plugin

Before Mirage can be used you need to make it scan your music so in Banshee Tools->Mirage Playlist Generator->Rescan the Music Collection as shown below

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dockbar-main
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install [...]
